Lauteraarsattel and Unders Studerjoch to the

Aletsch Glacier and Jungfraujoch

In this section are found some of the major peaks of the Oberland,

amongst them several exceeding the 'magic' 4000m mark. Not

only are the mountains high but they are also relatively remote. It is

not such an easy task here to 'tick off peaks in the way that one

might do in the Valais. Even to get close to some of the peaks

involves considerable effort. The highest peak in the Oberland, but

not the best known - the Finsteraarhorn -is in this section as is the

Lauteraarhorn. Amongst the 4000m peaks in the Alps they must

rank with peaks like the Dent d'Herens and the Aiguille Blanche de

Peuterey in terms of difficulty of access although not in terms of

difficulty in climbing.

Not only are the mountains high but the glacier systemis

massive, the Aletsch glacier being the longest in the Alps. Most

climbs in the section require a good deal of commitment and good

luck with the weather for a successful outcome. Given good

conditions several days at a time can be profitably spent high in the

mountains, traversing peaks and moving from hut to hut, or if you

simply wish to enjoy the mountain environment and not climb, but

to hut tours via the glacier system and interconnecting cols can be

very satisfying.

Maps covering this section are: Jungfrau (264) and

Interlaken (254)

Strahlegghorn 3461.2m

Blanckley, F Schuster with P Baumann, C Bernet and 2 other

guides, 14 Aug 1888

An unimportant summit but an excellent view point, probably

worthwhile climbing if higher peaks are out of condition.

48        TRAVERSE VIA SOUTH FLANK, SOUTH-WEST RIDGE

PD       AND NORTH RIDGE

S flank and SW ridge: K Struve with P Ogi, 20 Aug 1907

From the Schreckhorn hut follow Route 64 almost to Pt 2922m.

Before reaching this point turn more or less N and climb the snow

slopes to gain the SW ridge near Pt 3174m. Keep on the ridge to the

summit. 4-5hr

Descend the N ridge easily to the Strahlegg Pass and reverse

Route 49 to the hut.
