HUTS

 

H20     Bergli hut 3299m 644.62/157.44 SAC, 20 beds, no resident

F          guardian.

From the Jungfraujoch station follow the route to the

Monchjoch hut then follow Routes 122 and 123 to the hut. 2-2V2hr

From Grindelwald an approach can be made on foot although

this is long and tedious. Impossible crevasses may be encountered

below the hut. From Grindelwald follow the approach route to the

Fiescherwand. Once on the Unt. Grindelwald glacier cross it

Wwards and climb a track on the opposite side up the area called

Challi to reach the N edge of the Fiescher glacier. Climb this under

the Obers Challiband before finally turning S to reach the hut up

severely crevassed slopes. 8-9hr

 

H21     Mittelaletsch bivouac hut 3013m 644.95/146.12 SAC,

F          emergency tel, 13 beds, no resident guardian.

From Ktthboden follow Route H18 onto the Gross Aletsch

glacier. Climb up into the middle of the glacier then descend to its

junction with the Mittelaletsch glacier. Climb this moraine covered

glacier on the R side to about hut height then slant R to the hut. 6hr

An hour can be saved by starting at Bettmeralp and taking the

lift towards the Bettmerhorn. A track leads down to Roti Chumma

where the Gross Aletsch glacier can be joined. Cross it to the

junction with the Mittelaletsch glacier, then as above. 5 hr

 

H22     Monchiochhut 3650m 643.50/156.11 tel036713472private,

F          120 beds, no reduction for reciprocal card holders. Spring and July

tomid-Sept.

From the Jungfraujoch station follow Route 120 to the Ober

Manchjoch. The hut is a few m above the col on the N side. 45min

 

H23 Oberaletschhut 2640m 641.14/141.65 tel028271767SAC,

PE       60bedsmid June-mid Sept.

From Blatten take the lift to Belalp and follow a path past the

Belalp Hotel, where it descends steeply, to reach the S edge of the

Oberaletsch glacier. Descend the moraine onto the glacier then

follow a way-marked track up the glacier. This gradually works its

way into the centre of the glacier then goes up (the centre) until at

about the level of the hut. Now cut up Rwards, keeping well L of

the rock walls below the hut before finally turning SE and crossing a

jumble of rock and ice to the ladders and track leading to the hut. 3hr

Eigergletscher hotel 2320m sited close to the entrance of the

Jungfraujoch railway tunnel through the Eiger tel 036 55 22 21

private. Dormitory accomodation available.

Kleine Scheidegg Bahnhof buffet 2061m. Dormitory

accommodation available.

 

H24     Guggihut 2791m 641.08/156.97 SAC, 24 beds, week-ends June-

PE       Sept, no meals.

From Kl Scheidegg follow the track towards the

Eigergletscher station as far as the zig-zags. Take the R turn leading

to the moraines of the Eiger glacier. Descend these a little, before

turning S and crossing a torrent (difficult after rain) to gain the grass

and stone covered slopes on the W side of the Eiger glacier. Follow

traces of track then climb short steps up stone-strewn ground

heading SE until level with the hut. Traverse R to the hut. There is

no real advantage in taking the train to the Eigergletscher station. 3.5 hr.

 

H25     Hollandia hut 3235m also called Lotschen hut 640.06/147.24

F          tel. 028 49 11 35 SAC, 106 beds, April- May and mid July- mid

Aug. One of the coldest huts in the Alps. Recently completed

renovation should have improved this condition.

From Fafleralp follow Route 204 to the Lotschenlficke. The

hut is on the N side of the pass. Reach it by circling round on snow

to a point on the ridge a little above the hut (crevasses). 6-8hr

From the Jungfraujoch or Konkordia follow Route 205.

H26 Rottalhut 2755m 638.83/152.88 tel036 56 24 45 SAC, 46 beds,

PE week-ends July - Aug, no meals.

From Stechelberg the route is signposted past Stuefestein.

There is slight danger from ice avalanches. Not recommended in

winter as it is avalanche prone. 5-6hr
