Lotschenpass to Les Diableret

The mountains described in this section are widely separated, apart

from the small group situated between the L6tschenpass and the

Gemmipass. The other mountains described are fairly isolated

peaks which, in the W, are on the border between the Cantons of

Vaud and Valais. Apart from those close to the Lotschenpass, which

are comparable in height with those described in the previous

section, the peaks are of very modest altitude.

Maps covering this section are: Montana (273), Wildstrubel (263)

and St Maurice (272)

Lotschenpass 2678m

A long established glacier (on the N side) pass between the

Gasteretal and Lotschental. There is a privately owned hut on the

pass (see Huts).

290   SOUTH SIDE

P     From Ferden in the Lotschental follow the way marked track (or

road) via Kummenalp to the pass. 3V2hr

From Kippel a lift can be used to Holz. Walk up to

Lauchernalp (Berghaus) then take the long traverse track via

Sattlegi. 2hr

291   NORTH SIDE

PE    From Selden in the Gasteretal follow the path SSW to reach the

Lotschen glacier at Pt 2403m (Berghaus at Gfelalp). Climb the

glacier finishing on its E side. 3-4hr

Rinderhorn 3453m

G Studer with A and J Grichting, 6 Sept 1854

Situated just E of the Gemmipass its main feature is the tiered

glacier system on its N flank which, in effect, is three separate

glaciers with rocky escarpments between. The E ridge is D and has

some attraction. It is reached just W of Pt 3235m but is a bit loose.

292   NORTH RIDGE

PD    First ascent party

A much frequented route, ideal for an alpine novice. It is mostly snozo

and quite easy in good conditions.

From Schwarenbach follow the path towards the Gemmipass as far

as Pt 2229.4m. Climb up the valley on the S side of the Chli

Rinderhorn as far as the Rindersattel (traces of track over grass

slopes and scree). Scree-covered slopes above the saddle lead up the

N ridge to snow slopes. Follow these in an arc to the R as far as the

final snow slope below the summit. About two pitches of steeper

snow/ice lead to the top. 4-5hr
